All new in 2009, the Volkswagen Routan minivan has no powertrain changes for 2010. The Routan is a restyled version of the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, and shares their Chrysler-designed V6 engines.

S and SE models are powered by a 3.8-liter V6. Known as the EGH, it is a 12-valve pushrod engine, with a cast-iron block and aluminum heads. This engine was introduced in 1991, although it has been progressively updated since then. In 2006, Chrysler retuned it for stronger mid-range torque, at the cost of some top-end horsepower. In the Routan, the 3.8-liter engine is rated at 197 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque.

Standard on SEL and SEL Premium models is a 4.0-liter V6. This SOHC engine, known as the EGQ, is the latest iteration of a Chrysler engine family that dates back to 1993. It shares some basic architecture with the EGH engine, but it has an aluminum block with iron cylinder liners, four valves per cylinder, and belt-driven overhead camshafts. The 4.0-liter version first appeared in 2007, sporting various minor refinements intended to reduce noise and vibration. The version in the Routan is rated at 251 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque.

The 3.8-liter V6 has adequate power, but only the 4.0-liter engine can rival the muscle of the 250-horsepower Honda Odyssey or the 265-horsepower Toyota Sienna. Naturally, the Routan's performance is very similar to a Dodge Caravan or Chrysler Town & Country with the same engine. Neither Chrysler engine is as smooth or refined as its Honda and Toyota rivals, but engine noise is well subdued.

EPA fuel economy ratings are actually better for the 4.0-liter engine, an estimated 17/25 city/highway, compared to 16/23 for the 3.8-liter. However, the 3.8-liter engine burns regular gasoline, while Volkswagen recommends mid-grade fuel for the 4.0-liter.

Since successfully addressing the well publicized issues created by the RoHS and WEEE directives on the restriction of hazardous substances, the connector industry is now facing a new challenge -— Glow Wire. Although the IEC 60335-1 standard is primarily relevant in Europe, North American companies need to comply in order to service their global customers.

IEC 60335-1 was quietly put together in 1998, although its effects have only really become apparent since mid-2006. In the past, the emphasis was on the ability of electrical appliances and components to self-extinguish in accordance with the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) standard in the event of a naked flame. However, damage is now increasingly being caused by devices self-igniting when components malfunction — damage that may occur in particular when appliances are left unattended.

Because IEC 60335-1 describes the “Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances,” it is primarily about protecting end users and has also been adopted as a basic standard by well-known consumer protection organizations, such as the CE mark. Even the CCC mark, established in China, refers to IEC 60335-1.

Looking at the history of the standard, one can understand why there is now some urgency to its adoption. The standard’s origins go back to 1991, but led to lengthy discussions and objections. In fact, it was not passed until 2005. Consequently, during this time, appliance manufacturers were effectively excused from complying with the standard. Now, however, the uncertainty no longer exists, and appliances must conform to the standard and the resulting test procedure, which was defined under IEC 695-2-1.

With regard to connectors and wiring, the standard requires that insulation materials (connector housings, conductor insulation and printed circuit boards) in all circuits carrying more than 0.2 A be able to resist ignition in the event of glow-wire overload. A distinction is made between attended and unattended appliances.

Pull up a Chair

Just like Goldilocks of fairy-tale fame, the new V&A exhibition'Sit Down: seating for Kids' questions what it is that makes a successful seat. the event, whoch opened in February at the V&A Museum of Childhood, spans four centuries, and features a variety of examples of seating built for children.
As part of the exhibition, which runs until 5th september 2010, MA funiture design students from Bucks New University are displaying propotypes form their latest project, Seating for schools. their task was to create a seat suitable for children, for use in schools. with practical help form furniture company ercol they reaserched the existing range of school chairs before developing their own ideas with sketches and computer-generated designs.
Tommy Williams, a former student of De montford University studying Product and furniture Design, s part of the new product. design team at floorcare brand Vax feels that his previous experiance working at the company in 2008 during a summer placement played an important part in his success, and encourages all young design students to seek industrial placements. Vital skills can be learnt and valuable experiences can be won the 2009 EDF Energy Ideal Home Show for his /Micro Kitchen' design. Williams, who works agained giving the competitive edge at university and beyond. he claims that "working at vax gave me a great head start in the world of design." he is now working on a project at Vax to develop a new version of the lightweight multi cyclonic vacuum cleaner called the Mach Air Reach, which is soon to launch.

Robotic Vacuum Concept

The All-In-One Robot Cleaner designed by Metaphase is a concetp stick vacuum that carries a "passenger" robot. If you want to use the stick vacuum yourself, go ahead. If you've rather have the robot do the cleaning, you've got that option, too! A circular robot, similar looking to a Roomba, slides down off the stick vacuum and does its thing.

The robotic cleaner charges itself after docking with the main stick body. Each piece has its own motor so they can even be used at the same time.

A sensor at the base of the robot allows it to detect dust, dirt, etc. An infrared sensor keeps it from running into objects and a suction motor reduces noise.
